The word “Dandy” has always been connected with the idea of a super well dressed man sashaying nonchalantly down an avenue. Although the dictionary labels “Dandy” as a man who is much concerned with his dress and appearance; the true spirit of a “Dandy” encompasses more than gender. In fact, women who are commonly called “Quaintrelles” are as much a part of the “Dandy” experience as men.
Aside from its sartorial leanings of dressing smart, the spirit of “Dandyism” is more concerned with a classical and proper way of being. This includes: etiquette, mannerism, and the pursuit of knowledge, culture, how one lives, and even leisure pursuits. At its core it dictates the fundamentals of having a full and appropriate existence and knowing how, why, what to do and when to do it…properly.
Does society need another “Dandy”? Of course it does. In its spirit lies the simpler times of by-gone days when “please and thank you” were the norm, when women and men knew how to dress, and chivalry was displayed with pride. Thankfully, this time honored tradition is continuing as more and more people are adopting the ways and styles of their great-great grandparents. And so the legacy endures.
The Dandy American believes in celebrating this standard of living and honors the spirit of the “Dandy” found within all those who enjoy this wonderful way of life.
